Sewanee: The University of the South

The University of the South, also known as Sewanee, is located between Nashville and Chattanooga, atop the picturesque Cumberland Plateau. The small enrollment fosters a healthy community resulting in close faculty-student relationships. Physically beautiful Sewanee encompasses 13,000 acres fondly called The Domain.

Stay: Right on campus is the beautiful Sewanee Inn with gorgeous vistas of the rolling Tennessee mountaintop plateau. Book ahead as they only have 43 rooms.  The Holiday Inn Express and the American Eagle Inn are also good options.

Coffee: Stirlings is a coffee house owned by the University and operated by students set in a charming yellow Victorian house right on campus.

Breakfast: If you are staying at the Sewanee Inn, head to a delicious breakfast right in the hotel at Eighteen58. The Blue Chair Cafe is two minutes from campus and offers excellent coffee and a hearty breakfast.

Lunch: Student go-to Shenanigans offers good burgers, pizza and salads. Stirlings is also a popular go-to for lunch.

Dinner

Casual: Around seven minutes away, Sewanee students head to Mountain Goat Market for their delicious pizzas as well as sandwiches. On the Domain, modern American Octo-Pie menu is based on using the best seasonal ingredients to make fresh brick oven pizzas.

A Step Up: Presumably financed by Al Capone, High Point is a genuine housed in a beautiful 1920’s mansion. The atmosphere is relaxed and the food is delicious at Shakerag.

Local Attractions: Bring your hiking shoes! One student tells us: The best part about our beautiful school is the easily accessible hikes and views. The 22-mile “perimeter trail” goes around the entire exterior of the 13,000-acre campus. If you do not have to time conquer that, you could always do a portion of it or hike down to the majestic Bridal Veil Falls. Stunning views can be seen from Piney Point (about a 1-mile hike), Greensview (no hike required), Morgan’s Steep (amazing at sunset) or the Cross - I’d strongly recommend hiking from Morgan’s Steep to the Cross.
